Background:

The school was built in 1962 in a rural setting near the town of Yarm. During the last 10 years there has been continual refurbishment to accommodate rising pupil numbers. Improvements include five networked ICT rooms, all with e-mail and internet access, a library and resources centre run by a full-time librarian, sixth form art studio and refurbished science laboratories. The school's designation as a specialist arts college provided the funding for a 250-seaters studio theatre and an extended music suite with recording studio, rehearsal rooms and extensive ICT equipment for composition. A floodlit, Astroturf sports pitch has been built together with extended and refurbished changing facilities. Purpose-built house block accommodation supports a very strong pastoral system and the sixth form is housed in a discreet block with common room, study areas and ICT suite. A huge extra-curricular programme includes Duke of Edinburgh activities, Young Enterprise companies and school teams in all the major sports, an award winning orchestra as well as brass band, choirs and drama productions. The school aims to become a high achieving, ambitious and energetic school. Every pupil is encouraged to fulfil his or her potential.
