Background:
Hunwick Primary is a friendly, successful school situated in the centre of a pleasant Wear Valley village. An early year's pre school is available every morning and afternoon mid week in the community centre, which is attached to the school and there is also a Kids' club for pre and after school care available daily (run by a private nursery). The modern semi-open plan design consists of six classrooms and a small library which surrounds an attractive quad area (outside classroom) this has been designed to include a story chair, stage, seating and picnic tables. Other play areas have been recently developed and provide the children with a choice of activities at playtimes. They include a play trail, seating and various line markings for games. The large playing field is extremely popular with the children and it is used constantly during good weather. All classrooms are well equipped and include interactive whiteboards and projectors. Children have access to laptops on a regular basis as ICT plays an important role in teaching and learning. Involvement in the ICT Testbed Project for four years means will be at the forefront of ICT developments in education. The children excel in their after school clubs which include drama, art, choir and for those more energetic children, Fit for Life and Fit for Fun. These help increase the creativity and imagination of those pupils which attend the classes. They may even be lucky enough to be awarded the Peter Nesom Trophy, which is presented to the best pupil at the end of each term. The school has been awarded variety of external awards including ICT Mark, Active Mark Gold, Artsmark, Basic Skills, Leadership in ICT Award. Hunwick Primary is a village school with a atmosphere where all children are valued. A rich learning environment with multitude opportunities to stimulate the learners.
