Background:
Cassop is a small, rural village school situated in open fields mid-way between the villages of Cassop and Quarrington Hill. It is housed in a building which dates from 1823, and which was re-furbished in 1972 to include purpose-built, modern facilities. The classrooms are 'large' and have carpeted areas, while other facilities include a dining area and kitchen, hall, library, group room and music and drama room. A nature reserve and site of special interest are located close by, with which the school is closely linked. Cassop places emphasis on first hand learning and all children in Years 5 and 6 are given at least two opportunities to go on a residential visit. The school makes 'full use' of visiting experts, artists, museums and art galleries, and has a 'well developed' series of links with industry. Sport is 'strongly encouraged' and school hours are organised to give a longer than normal lunch break, which allows children to play games together. Team sports offered include football, netball and cricket, while the school also has a cross country team and an 'excellent' record in swimming. Cassop aims to 'take each individual pupil to the limits of their abilities'.
