Background:

Established in 1850; moved to current location in 1969; housed in a modern, single-storey building, with separate junior and infant departments linked by an assembly hall. Impressive grounds include two playgrounds and a sports field; developed in recent years to offer a 'secret garden', climbing apparatus for foundation and Key Stage 1 children, an all-weather safety surface, and a quiet courtyard with picnic tables. French is taught to all pupils in Year 6, in addition to the national curriculum; mathematics is a strength of the school. Extra-curricular activities include fencing, Latin, football, hockey, cricket, netball, choir, recorder, and cycling proficiency. Community links with local church, Durham University sports students, Sunderland Football Club, Durham School, Durham High School, Durham branch of the Lawn Tennis Association and DBEE engineers, who work with Year 6 pupils. Recent charity fundraising has included sponsored runs for Greggs Children's Cancer Research Fund and Butterwick Children's Hospice. Children also designed and raised funds towards a stained glass window in the local church to celebrate the millennium. Over-subscribed, with 1.2 applications per place.
