Background:

The school's patron saint, St Godric, was an 11th Century hermit who lived on the banks of the River Wear. A confidante of Thomas Beckett, Godric was sought out by many for his theological insight and spiritual wisdom. The school was founded in 1874 to serve the parishes of Thornley and Wheatley Hill, between which it is situated. The grounds include a play yard, a 'large' field and a nature garden. The curriculum is taught within a 'Christian, caring atmosphere' and children with special educational needs are given extra support, after full consultation with parents. Pupils receive weekly swimming lessons and Key Stage 2 pupils can learn a brass instrument. An extra-curricular computer club is offered and the school enters teams in local swimming, football and netball leagues. Every other year, one class is taken to a county field study centre.
