Background:

Founded in 1846 by the National Society as the first school in Thornaby, it moved to its current buildings in 1964. It is now composed of a grassed courtyard surrounded by traditional classrooms, plus three mobile classroom units to accommodate growing numbers. There is also a multi-purpose hall, a computer in every classroom and 'many other educational resources'. The school'serves a catchment area of mixed private and council housing, but over 50% of pupils live outside the catchment and attend by parental choice. The various extra-curricular activities offered at lunchtimes and after school include musical instrument groups, drama, netball, rounders, athletics, country dancing and pottery. Tuition is available in the violin, the cello and brass instruments. A residential course takes place each year in the Yorkshire Dales. The school enjoys 'strong' support from parents and the community, particularly through the 'flourishing' parent-teacher association. A school bank enables children to save money.
