Background:
Situated in West Darlington, but draws pupils from wide area; established in 1857; rebuilt in 1986 on pleasant former grounds of convent grammar school. The site has many mature trees and a secluded environment. The single-storey, open-plan building is constructed around a quadrangle; has a small hall and a music/computer room. Broad and balanced curriculum extended by extra-curricular musical and artistic opportunities. The choir sings at homes for the elderly on special occasions and pupils have frequently won the Country Dancing Shield at the Darlington Festival. Sixth-form college and undergraduate students are invited to do work-experience at the school. Each year the school supports Oxfam's 'Adopt a Granny' scheme, in addition to other charities. Children can also save money through the school bank. A weekly parish Mass is led by the pupils, to which families are invited. Active and supportive parent-teacher association raises funds; many parents offer help around the school.
