Background:
Opened in 1972, the building is of a 'semi-open plan' design, with shared areas between classrooms. There is a separate library and the Key Stage 1 and 2 areas are linked by a hall. The school is located on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland, within walking distance of the Bishop's Palace, Auckland Castle and the River Gaunless. The national curriculum is taught to all pupils and sports clubs include cricket, football and netball. The school's recorder groups practice several times a week and there is also a choir. The 'enthusiastic' Friends of Henknowle School organisation is a registered charity and pupils benefit from good links with the local community. Each year the children become involved in raising money for local and national charities. Residential field trips feature in the education programme for older pupils. All classrooms now have PC and internet access. A number of children have special educational needs (SEN) and they receive support from specialist staff.
