Background:
Built more than 60 years ago, St John the Evangelist RC Primary was converted to a primary school in 1970. Since a barrage was constructed on the nearby River Tees, the school has been able to make use of new facilties for canoeing, bell boating and dinghy sailing. Local ecology and wildlife parks provide valuable resources to enhance classroom learning about science and nature in an otherwise heavily industrialised area. The school community is viewed as a particular strength at St John's and its relationship with parents is valued. They are invited to help with extra-curricular activities which typically include netball, football, choir, guitar, recorders, cricket, violin, brass, rounders, athletics and canoeing.
