Background:
St Michael's Esh Laude is the oldest Catholic Primary School in the Diocese. It was built of local Durham sandstone in 1795 and located four miles west of Durham city. It represents a cross-section of socio-economic backgrounds and set in almost two acres adjoining the village green. It has a playground and playing field. The school has a new sports hall and arts area funded mainly by the Sports and Arts Councils. It provides extra-curricular activities and clubs, which include music tuition in violin, viola, flute, clarinet, keyboard, guitar, recorder, and drums. Sporting opportunities include football, rugby, netball, cricket and rounders. Over-subscribed, with 1.9 applications per place. Artsmark Silver (2003); DfES achievement award (2003). Ethos: 'The fundamental aim of the school is the all-round development of each child so that he/she will fulfil his/her potential and use their skills to good advantage'.
